This is the HMAS Otway.

It sits in the centre of a ton named Holbrook, which is an adoptive submarine town.
I spent some time peering the east and west, wondering where the coast was.
It’s out there somewhere,400kms away.
The reason why Holbrook is a submarine town is because it originally started out as being called 10 mile creek. Then some German bloke moved in and made great beer and they called it Germantown.
Then the war started and everyone decided that Germans were far too dodgy and perhaps the town should name itself after some naval bloke who took a sub into dangerous waters during the war and shot out some torpedos, and so Holbrook became it’s name (which I think means ‘xenophobia’ in ancient Lancashireian) and this enormous sardine can was plonked in the centre!
Sometime around noon
I have just sung
“There’s a track winding back to an old fashioned shack along the road to GUNDAGAI”
For the 7673th time.
Well, it’s just so exciting finding the ACTUAL places that have been named in aussie poems and songs.
I whooped when we went past Ironbark!..and there I was thinking Banjo Patterson was just a crazy old coot making stuff up as he went along.
Gundagai is a very scenic town with lots of old wooden bridges and I decided to run along the road in Gundagai, which didn’t lead to an old fashioned shack, but to a sensational view of the town

and the wonderfully named Murrumbidgee River.

The visit to Gindagai was topped off just out of town with the monument commemorating the Dog sitting on the Tuckerbox.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k160/sylvie_011/tuckerbox.jpg
The story behind this goes that a Rover was leading some cattle out when the wagon broke. He stopped to fix it and while he did that his dog sat on his tuckerbox (lunchbox) and pooped in it.
This is not the first time a monument has been erected to some shitter.

Not only is this state really small, but,we can’t find a place to stay!
Everything is booked out and the Eagles are 25 points in front and we just want to sit and watch the fricken grand final!!!!WHAT ARE ALL THESE BLOODY PEOPLE DOING HERE?
Wait-maybe it really IS porn capital
We may have to get into a pub and sleep in the car.
Have I mentioned there are 4 of us in the car now?
And no.I can’t sleep on the bloody dash.
